Deskripsi
Biomarkers are exciting new tools granting both physicians and patients the ability to assess patient health status. As a complex, rapidly-emerging medical field, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has put in a great deal of effort into formulating and consolidating common definitions to be used in the “Biomarkers, EndpointS, and other Tools,” or BEST, resource. Under this system of classification, there are six different subtypes to biomarkers according to their application process: diag-nostic, monitoring, pharmacodynamic/response, predictive, prognostic, and safety biomarkers. It is integral to remember that these subtypes have varying degrees of overlap depending on the specific biomarker in question. Utilized together, these different subtypes of biomarkers can paint a comprehensive picture of the patient’s current health status, risk of disease development, remission, or progression, and response to various treatments.
Modern technology has made measuring levels of glucose, cytokines, or other markers much easier, to the point that a patient can measure their own levels outside of the clinical setting. Of course, this is a relatively new innovation in medicine that can pair well with the traditional methods involved in hands-on physical diagnosis, medical testing and data collection
